Hi All,
Today, 10/13, Don Carrier and I decided to bird some local areas to look for
sparrows and other migrants. We started at my place here on Compton Mt, where
we picked up 26 species including, Chipping Sparrows, Common Raven, Cooper's
Hawk, a Hermit Thrush and a Wood Thrush, a Palm Warbler, a Purple Finch, a
Red-shouldered Hawk, a Tennessee Warbler, White-throated Sparrows, Wild Turkeys
and a Yellow-rumped Warbler.

We then drove to the home of David Raines in the Breaks (with David's
permission) and picked up 29 species there (not 29 more species). Immediately
we found Swamp Sparrows, Song Sparrows, and White-throated Sparrows. Hawks were
on the move there with Cooper's, Red-shouldered and at least 4 Red-tails being
seen. A Great Blue Heron flew past us into the hollow behind David's House.
A couple of Gray Catbirds were still hanging around, and a Purple Finch was
seen at a feeder, along with Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. We also found Northern
Flickers and a Pileated Woodpecker.

After checking the lake in the Breaks Park, where we found a single Pied-billed
Grebe, we drove to Beaver's Knob just below Elkhorn City, KY. On that reclaimed
strip site we found more sparrow species - Field Sparrow, Savannah Sparrows and
a couple of juvenile White-crowned Sparrows. We found at least 15 Palm Warblers
there and one Killdeer. We also found another Red-tailed Hawk.

We then drove to Lick Creek on the head waters of Fishtrap Lake in Pike County
KY, where we found another Great Blue, more Swamp and White-throated Sparrows
and added a Fox Sparrow, our first of the season. We also added a Barred Owl
and another Red-shouldered Hawk to the group.

We came out with a total of 50 species for the day. The weather was absolutely
beautiful with fall blue skies and a moderate temperature, which made for a
great day of birding.

Following is the complete day's list.
