Yesterday (12/13/13) Mike Sanders and I took a trip to a very cold Burkes Garden in hopes of seeing some migrant and resident raptors. With eBird and listserves lighting up like christmas trees with this year's Snowy Owl eruption, we thought there may be an outside chance for a sighting there with Burkes Garden's inviting habitat. We of course dipped on the Snowy Owl and on some other regulars like the Bald Eagle pair and also on Golden Eagles. We did end up with 37 species for our four hours of birding. Some notables were 4 Loggerhead Shrikes, 5 Wilson Snipe, numerous American Kestrels, 50 Canada Geese, a lone Red-headed Woodpecker, one Northern Harrier and upwards of 20 Red-tailed Hawks. Perhaps our best bird of the day was a perched Rough-legged hawk who gave us great looks through Mike's scope. At one point, we had the Rough-legged, Harrier and a Raven all together in the FOV of the scope. Although we missed a couple of target-birds it was a very enjoyable day of birding. I personally can't get enough of Burkes Garden and yesterday's trip made me look forward to February's outing. Daryl Owens
