I only birded a short time today here on my property, but managed to get 32
species. The most notable were a male Rose-breasted Grosbeak, a Great
Crested Flycatcher, a Yellow-throated Warbler, a Hooded Warbler, my first of
the season Wood Thrushes, a Sharp-shinned Hawk, a White-throated Sparrow
still hanging around before heading north, and a couple of Ruby-throated
Hummingbirds. Below is the complete list.
Nesting on the property are a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks, 3 pairs of
Eastern Bluebirds in nest boxes, a pair of Eastern Phoebes nesting in my
shed, two pairs of Tree Swallows in nest boxes, 8 Purple Martins nesting in
gourds, a Carolina Wren nesting somewhere near the backyard, a pair of
Carolina Chickadees nesting in a knothole in an apple tree, a pair of Hooded
Warblers nesting in the woods near the yard, a pair of Yellow-throated
Warblers nesting in the White Pines in the backyard, a pair of at least one
pair of Chipping Sparrows nesting in the same White Pines, two pairs of
Brown Thrashers nesting on the property, one pair nesting in the shrubs
along the driveway and a pair of Song Sparrows nesting in an evergreen
shrub.
The parent birds are carrying so much of our peanut butter suet to their
young, they are finishing a block a day.
