Today Sheldon Woods and I went fishing on John Flannagan Reservoir in neighboring Dickenson County. There in a cove we found nickel to quarter sized freshwater jellyfish. I had never heard of these until about six weeks ago the local news channel did a story about some being found in a local pond here in Buchanan County. They are called Appalachian Mountain Jellyfish. They are rare but sometimes pop up in great numbers in ponds and lakes. Here are some not great photos of some of the hundreds we saw. The first 3 photos are of the jellyfish in the water. The 4th one is of a jellyfish that is hanging from one of Sheldon's lures. The last one is a close-up of that same jellyfish. If you look closely at the last picture you can see the internal organs of the jellyfish. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
