Last night about 11:00 I flipped on the outside light out front of the house,
and a Barred Owl was sitting on the ground between the walk and the Hemlock
tree where a large patch of snow had melted. It sat there for a few seconds
then flew into the lower branches of the tree. It kept staring at the ground.
From past experience I think it was hunting nightcrawlers. I got up a few
minutes ago at 5:15, and it was there again closer to the house this time.
Again it flew up into the Hemlock. I turned the light off so he/she could
finish breakfast. The snow has started fairly heavily again, so the owl's
hunting spot won't be open long.
I didn't try for photos, but here are a couple of one with the same behavior in
the past.
