Today I was joined at my place by fellow birders Don Carrier and Mike
Sanders in the hope that the recent cold front would bring in more fall
migrants, and we were certainly not disappointed.
Within minutes of their arrival at about 8:00 a.m. the trees came alive with
birds darting everywhere. We logged 60 species for the day at my place with
the exception of the Pied-billed Grebe and the Bobolinks, which were found
in a neighbor's farm pond and pasture. Fifteen of the species were wood
warblers with the high count of individual species being 19 Cape Mays.
Tennesses were not far behind with 13 and Chestnut-sided in third place with
12. At times there were so many birds moving through that there was no way
to get our binoculars on many of them for a positive ID. A nice surprise was
two Red-breasted Nuthatches that appeared in the backyard.
The complete species list for the day is below.
We saw our FOS Gray-cheeked Thrush today. Also present were 4 Swainson's
Thrushes. Here is a photo of a Gray-cheeked in the yard stream later in the
day.
