Today a FOS Yellow-throated Vireo was singing in the backyard. They have nested
in the maple trees there in past years. An hour or so later a FOS Red-eyed
Vireo was singing on the opposite side of the yard at the edge of the woods.

About 10:00 this morning my pigeons got their first encounter with a predator.
I have had the four pigeons for about 2 months now. They were just out of the
nest when I got them. Each morning I turn them out to fly. After about 15
minutes of flying they perch in the top of a large walnut tree just above their
loft. They had only been perched about 5 minutes when suddenly they burst from
the tree in unison flying away faster than I had ever seen them fly before. In
a couple of seconds a Sharp-shinned Hawk came gliding over the tree with some
of my resident martins dive bombing it. It was too occupied with avoiding the
martins to chase the pigeons. After the hawk left the pigeons circled for
awhile before returning to their perch.

The Yellow-throated Warbler that showed up here about a week ago is singing
every day in the White Pines at the edge of the yard. Yesterday there were
three of them having a battle. I'm not sure whether it was two males fighting
over a female, two females fighting over a male or a pair defending their
nesting territory. The battle went on for about 10 minutes before one of them
left the yard and peace returned. Spring is always fun.
