Hi All, Yesterday in and around our yard here on the mountain I managed to log 34 species. No definite migrants yet, but that should start soon. The highlights were Hooded Warblers, Worm-eating Warbler, Yellow-breasted Chat, Yellow Warbler, Cedar Waxwings, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, Orchard Oriole, lots of hummers, Wild Turkeys and Pileated Woodpeckers. I happened to be at the right spot when 3 Pileated males flew in and fed on Sassafras berries for several minutes. Recently, a female Pileated has started to work on the dead, 12 foot cherry tree in our yard, which I left for use by the birds. The last couple of days I have been able to quietly slide open our kitchen window and photograph her at work. The photos can be seen at http://www.pbase.com/mayhorn/pileated_2009 Below is the day's complete list.
