[bcbirdclub] Purple Martin nests and young

This past week I did a nest check of the gourds in my small Purple Martin
colony. There were six young ones that had recently hatched and thirteen
eggs yet to hatch. Notice the green leaves that the adult martins carry and
place in the nest. It's not known why they do it, but it is believed by some
that it helps keep away insect pest like mites and flies.

Notice also the birm of mud the adults put in front of the nest to keep out
starlings and other predators that would eat their young.
