Thanks to all of the Russell and Buchanan County bird club members who welcomed
us to their meeting on Tuesday in Rosedale, VA, provided great food and
fellowship and even listened to my Alaskan powerpoint at a late hour when most
of our blood was in our stomachs after a great meal supplied by the church
ladies.
Margaret and I are quite jealous of your wonderful bird clubs and wish that we
were close enough to visit more often.
After enjoying Roger Mayhorn's fantastic tales of Cape May warblers in his yard
dining on grapes too close to his lens to focus, we were astonished today to
find a similar situation (see photo) of a male Cape May eating grapes near the
Music Center (MM 213) along the Blue Ridge Parkway !!! Amazing and reminiscent
of the Cape May's we had in our Florida yard last April enjoying the flowers of
sea grapes. These birds are oenophiles for sure!
Thanks again and by all means stop by if any of you are passing along the SW FL
coast near Englewood, FL (just south of Sarasota/Venice and north of Cape
Coral/Fort Myers). We would be happy to give you a birding tour starting with
our bayfront yard on Manasota Key with 160 species of plants chosen
specifically for their values to wildlife.
Cheers- Bill Dunson
