Lynda sighted this very small Sharp-shinned Hawk in our yard a couple of days ago. It was probably drawn in by all of the bird activity around the feeders. The Sharpie was probably no more than 10 inches long. The block it is perched on in the photo is only 6 inches across. I have included a photo of a Starling on the same block for comparison. The third photo shows the hawk on our platform feeder. That gives you an idea of its true size. The hawk stayed around for over an hour as the chickadees and titmice fussed and flew very close to it. The bird was originally on the platform feeder, but when a titmouse flew to the suet block (the block the bird is perched on) the hawk flew over there, but didn't give chase when the titmouse flew away. After about half an hour a chickadee flew by the Sharpie and the Sharpie gave chase. It disappeared around the back of the house, but was back within a few seconds with empty talons. Finally, the hawk gave up and flew into the woods with no lunch. Roger Mayhorn Compton Mt
