Yesterday my son Christian and I traveled to Roan Mountain to check on the high altitude nesters. Hundreds of Juncos filled the air with their calls. Pine Siskin's played in the park like a group of school children. Red-breasted nuthatches fussed about like worrying mothers. Golden crowned kinglets zipped about keeping a close eye on the action. And like the bad kid on the playground Alder flycatchers announced "Free Beer, Free Beer". A life bird for both of us. One interesting observation was a Junco preparing his feathers with a bit of oil from the preening gland. Don Carrier
