Hi All,
The year 2007 was the most extraordinary year for unusual or rare birds to
occur in Buchanan and Dickenson Counties ever recorded. Sixteen sightings were
recorded with 14 of those being in Buchanan County. The two Peregrine Falcons
on the list could be discounted since the birds were released in the park by
the VDGIF, but I left them on because it is such an historic event to see
Peregrines once again flying there after almost 50 years of absence.The
Blackpoll Warbler, the Dicksissels and the Great Egrets may not be considered
rare or unusual in other areas, but they are definitely considered so in
Buchanan County.
The cause for all of these unusual birds appearing in the area is a mystery,
but the fact that they were noted is due in great part to the those of you in
the bird club who have a good knowledge of birds and sharp eyes. You are to be
congratulated. A job well done. I think we will be hard pressed to match this
number of rarities within the county anytime within the near future.
