While in Burkes Garden with relatives on Saturday we found this small brown
snake on the driveway of the Lutheran Church. The snake measured only about
6 or 7 inches long, and had some unusual markings on its head and neck. From
what I could find on the internet it is a North American Brown Snake of the
genus Storeria, which grow to only about 12 inches in length. They are
native to the Eastern U.S., Canada and Mexico.
I have spent a lot of time in the outdoors, and I don't ever remember seeing
this species before. I would be interested if others are familiar with it.
