Yesterday I counted 17 species on and under our feeders with a bit of snow
on the ground and temperatures dipping to 15°. Included in those were 2 Fox
Sparrows, 1 Rusty Blackbird, 1 Northern Mockingbird, 1 Brown Thrasher and 8
Red-winged Blackbirds. The Northern Mockingbird and the Brown Thrasher may
be spending the winter here, which is unusual for us. We seldom get
Mockingbirds, even during breeding season, and we have had Brown Thrashers
spend the winter here only a few times. The 2 Fox Sparrows were not under
the feeders at the same time, but I knew there were 2 because one did not
have a tail.
