I was so pleasantly surprised to find that this book appeared on BARD on
December 22. I read it when it appeared on Bookshare because I didn't
expect to see it on BARD. NLS hasn't seen fit to carry any of Chris Hedges'
books since, "War Is The Force That Gives life meaning", and that was
several books of his before this one. I assume that this is because Chris
Hedges is a dissident, a modern day prophet, a man who tells us things that
many of us don't want to hear. He's sort of like Noam Chomsky who writes
many books, but they've only managed to put one up on BARD. Then there's
Seymour Hersh. They used to have several of his books. But like the main
stream media, they banned him until now when his new book, Reporter,
recently appeared on BARD. I think this is happening because the people at
NLS realize how desperately we need to hear all of the alternative voices
now, how important it is for our country, and for the whole world, to rceive
information that isn't controlled by corporate profits. This book that Chris
Hedges wrote, is a description of the terrible state in which so much of our
country finds itself. It is his latest book, in which he describes what
happens to people when the society in which they live has become sick and is
dying. Each week, he writes about the same subject on a website, Truthdig.
Chris Hedges was a foreign bureau chief for the New York Times until he gave
a talk at a college in 2003, opposing the Iraq War. Because of that speech,
he was forced to resign from the Times. Sinc then, he has been writing, and
he has been teaching inmates and college students at a New Jersey prison.
