AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS | 2:30 PM - 3:50PM
Drugs, Violence and Free Trade Agreements in Mexico and Central America
Presenters: Benjamin Prado, Program Coordinator, US-Mexico Border
Program for American Friends Services Committee. Hosted by Greater
Boston Trade Justice
The workshop will explore how the drug traffic, violence and government
complicity are impacted by, and impact, free trade agreements. The war
on drugs is a political war. One can state this confidently by looking
at who benefits from its being waged. This is especially true in Mexico
where the primary benefactors of the US war on drugs are: corporations
and banks often based in the United States and their allies in the
Mexican political and financial world. It is a war funded by taxpayers
in North, Central and South America being fought by often brutal means
and under false pretenses. This is not a war on drugs. It is a war on
people whose lives and communities stand in the way of multinational
exploitation and profiteering. This workshop will describe these
connections, and assaults on how human rights organizations here and
abroad need to work together.
Benjamin Prado is the Program Coordinator of US-Mexico Border Program of
the American Friends Service Committee. For 15 years as Program
Coordinator his role has been to promote Human Rights, document cases of
abuse and led work on policy advocacy in support of migrant workers and
their families. Benjamin has led campaigns to educate the public on the
consequences of the impact of neo-liberal free trade agreements,
participated in international delegations throughout Latin America. He
is a specialist on the policies of Border Militarization, Immigration
law enforcement strategies and tactics, and has coordinated community
actions in defense of people’s democratic, constitutional and human
rights. He has documented countless cases of abuse of authority, has
videotaped federal immigration raids as they happen, and has himself
been the victim of Border Patrol abuse.
Greater Boston Trade Justice was formerly No TPP Boston. Our mission
is to improve international trade so that the most people will benefit.
Our current focus is the renegotiation of NAFTA, the North American Free
Trade Agreement. We demand removal of NAFTA’s Investor-State Dispute
Settlement provision, and inclusion of enforceable provisions to protect
labor and the environment. These goals are achievable and will extend
the economic benefits of trade while protecting ecosystem and climate.
What can Gramsci teach us today?
Presenter: Myrna Morales, Left Roots
What is it about this current moment that makes Antonio Gramsci's
analysis so pivotal in our struggle for collective liberation? Having
spent the last years of his life in prison ruminating and analyzing
the moment that was missed during his time, are we going to look back
and also wonder if we are squandering this moment? Are we even going
to be able to look back given the current moment? This workshop seeks
to engage with Gramsci's concepts of the war of position and the war of
maneuver and how they are relevant today.
Puerto Rico: Colonization and Oppression
Facilitator: Dorotea Manuela
PowerPoint Presentation Produced by: Ivys Fernandez
Presenters/Panelists: Myriam Ortiz, Puerto Rican Anti Colonial activist
and artist; Dorotea Manuela, Afro Boricua (Puerto Rican) Independentista
(Anti Colonial, Puerto Rican and oppressed peoples’ Liberation
Movements): Antiracist labor and Human Rights Activist; Roberto Torres
Collazo, Puerto Rican Anti Colonial editor of revista digital Cambio

From 1493 when Spain invaded Puerto Rico aka "discovered" its
inhabitants the Taino native people they systematically enslaved and
decimated them which led to the transporting of Africans and their
enslavement. In 1898, following the imperialist war with Spain the USNA
(United States of North America) seized and colonized Puerto Rico. This
session will include a PowerPoint presentation followed by a panel
discussion. Comments and questions will be entertained only after the
conclusion of the panel discussion. The Power Point will provide a
historical and political background of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico has
experienced several crises natural, economic and political, about which
mainland people are both misinformed and uninformed. Immediately
following the presentation, there will be a brief panel discussion in
which panelists will emphasize various aspects of Puerto Rico's current
situation and its needs. Following the panel discussion participants
will be encouraged to engage and continue the discussion.
From Boston to Palestine: Approaches to Solidarity
Presenter: Ari Wohlfeiler, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Amahl Bishara,
Associate Professor,Tufts University
We will discuss the JVP’s “Deadly Exchange” campaign to end US & Israeli
police partnerships, including on campuses. This approach opens the
possibility for intersectional, anti-racist activism around reclaiming
safety for all in the United States alongside criticizing Israel’s
highly militarized approach to colonial policing and repression. We will
also address Boston-based organizing to build awareness about
water-related partnerships between the US and Israel and to build
support for an intersectionally informed Palestinian environmental
education program.
Amahl Bishara is associate professor of anthropology at Tufts
University. She is a filmmaker and has led collaborative workshops to
produce bilingual children’s books with Palestinian refugee youth.
Digital Security 101
Presenters: James O'Keefe & Steve Revilak, Massachusetts Pirate Party
Mass surveillance of the public, targeted surveillance of minorities,
corporate surveillance of consumers… It seems like there is a lot to be
afraid of these days. It's clear that our digital communications are
simply not secure unless we go out of our way to defend our human right
to privacy. This workshop will go over some basic techniques you can use
to protect yourself and defend your right to free speech. The presenters
are experienced digital security teachers, members of the Pirate Party,
and privacy and social justice activists.
