Subject: A Dem upset in a special election -- The Koch brothers of Latin
America -- Trump's opioid commission ideas are shockingly good
In November, Donald Trump carried this House district in Iowa with 58 percent
of the vote Last night there was a special election, and the Republican made a
huge issue out of the fact that his opponent, as a school board member, had
voted to allow trans students to use the bathroom that aligned with their
identified gender. The attack ad came just a month after a local transgender
13-year-old committed suicide. Such cruelty in the name of politics is wrong
under any circumstances, but in this case it turned out to be bad politics,
too. Iowa voters resoundingly rejected the heartless move, handing the election
to the Democrat by a whopping ten-point margin.
So far in 2017, voters have swung an average of 13 points away from Republicans
and toward Democrats. If that keeps up, it's going to be a very bad 2018 for
the GOP, and as this Iowa race shows, their hopes of making transphobia a
political winner for them might not be working out so well.
The Koch brothers of Latin America (Los Hermanos Koch?)
The Intercept's Lee Fang, whose pioneering work on the Koch brothers first
elevated them to the national stage, has a new investigation into a network of
libertarian think tanks that are methodically transforming Latin American
politics. It's a must read.
(Lee is also on Jeremy Scahill's podcast this week, which you can find here.)
Trump's Opioid Commission
Trump held a briefing on the opioid epidemic yesterday and used it to promise
"fire and fury" against North Korea. Yes, that's the setting he chose to do his
mad-man act (or maybe it's not an act). On the topic of opioids, Trump offered
little more than '80s drug-war nostalgia, while his hapless HHS Secretary, Tom
Price, rejected the idea that an emergency should be declared. But underneath
all the ignorance, the commission's recommendations are actually quite good.
Maybe there's some way they can sneak past Trump and Price. Here's my story on
it with Dave Dayen.

You're getting this email because you either signed up for it or you took a

out. Either way, I hope you're enjoying it. I'm the Washington bureau chief at
The Intercept, and I send this several times a week. If you see an ad here,
it's there because sending mass emails turns out to be really expensive. I'm
not making any money off of it; it goes to the email service provider and just
defrays the cost a bit. If you want to contribute directly to help keep the
thing running, you can do so here, though be warned a donation comes with no
tote bags or extra premium content or anything. Or you can buy a copy of Out of
the Ooze: The Story of Dr. Tom Price, the first book put out by Strong Arm
Press, a small progressive publishing house I cofounded.
If somebody forwarded you this note, you can sign up to start getting your own
copy here.
