This includes two parts of a discussion on Syria which I think is informative.
I learned from the book on Syria that I’m reading, that Syria is one of the
countries that the colonial powers carved out of the Middle East after WW1. It
was owned by France. A revolution took place in the early 60’s which displaced
the Syrian ruling class with a socialist-like state. Assad’s father became the
ruler. He was despotic. But he was also resented because he removed the special
privileges of the wealthy, educated elites.
