Subject: The criminalization of journalism
The arrest and likely extradition of WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange today
is troubling news for journalism around the world.
The Department of Justice alleges that Assange offered to help whistleblower
Chelsea Manning by offering to crack a password. But they back up their
indictment by citing common journalistic practices — trying to protect the
source by using an encrypted online service to communicate.
Journalists do this with sources constantly. I believe this is the start of the
criminalization of journalism.
This is concerning for us and any other news outlet because it sets a dangerous
precedent that could be used to prosecute journalists for working with their
sources. We need to be ready.

So I’m writing you today with an important ask: Will you become a member of
The Intercept and contribute $3 to support our independent journalism and
protect the right of journalists to do their work?

At The Intercept, we take pride in pursuing fierce, adversarial investigative
journalism that holds the powerful accountable. And we know that a lot of
people in power don’t like our journalism.
What is especially concerning to me today is to see some members of the U.S.
media cheering Assange’s arrest. Worse, in many cases, these are the same
people who have spent the last two years decrying President Donald Trump’s
attacks on the press, but who are now celebrating criminal charges by Trump’s
administration against the founder of a organization that published documents
of significant importance.
No matter what you think of Julian Assange, it is clear that the government
prosecuting him is a direct threat to freedom of the press and journalists
everywhere.
If the government successfully convicts Assange, who will be next?
We don’t run ads at The Intercept. We’re a nonprofit. Our goal is to be
supported by as many of our readers as possible, because we know that the best
way to have truly independent journalism is to depend on those who read it.
