Monday in Columbia, South Carolina, a video surfaced of a young Black
student being attacked by a police officer at her school. Her crime? Not
getting out of her chair.
Yes, you read that right: A Richland County police officer was called into
the classroom when she didn't want to stand up, and he proceeded to
forcefully remove her.to the ground.
What's scary is that this wasn't an isolated incident. It's an alarming
trend, and we're dedicated to stopping it.

policing in schools.
The statistics tell a story we're all too familiar with: Youth of color are
being criminalized on the street and in the classroom - sometimes brutally.
In South Carolina, Black students are twice as likely as white students to
be arrested at school. It's also a crime to "disturb" a school there - which
means students can be handcuffed for simply being loud or walking out of
class without permission.
But criminalizing students for minor misconduct just marginalizes the
students who most need help and funnels them into the school-to-prison
pipeline.
Treating our young people like criminals is traumatizing for them, and
destructive for our society as a whole. We'll only see a change if we all
stand up and demand it.
