Trump: I will deliver State of the Union 'when the shutdown is over'
| 23 Jan 2019 | President Trump said late Wednesday that he would
deliver his State of the Union address after the ongoing partial
government shutdown
is over. "As the Shutdown was going on, [Speaker] Nancy Pelosi asked me
to give the State of the Union Address," Trump wrote in a tweet. "I
agreed. She
then changed her mind because of the Shutdown, suggesting a later date.
This is her prerogative - I will do the Address when the Shutdown is
over." Trump's
move to delay delivering the annual address came hours after Speaker
Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)
said she would block him
from delivering the State of the Union in the House chamber until the
government reopens. The president was scheduled to deliver the speech on
Jan. 29.
Taliban Used US-Made Humvee in Ambush That Killed Dozens

Georgia man plotted attack on White House, authorities say
--Authorities also said he planned to travel to the Islamic State

Federal authorities
on Wednesday arrested a metro Atlanta man they said was plotting to
attack the White House but instead got entangled with the FBI. Hasher
Jallal Taheb,
21, of Cumming, was taken into custody in Gwinnett County while
allegedly trying to exchange his vehicle for explosives. He later
appeared in court in
downtown Atlanta in the case brought by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task
Force. Authorities said Taheb was acting alone and they made no
accusation that
he had ties to any terrorist group. He was arrested after a tip from a
resident who said the young man had been radicalized.
White House expresses 'support' for Covington Catholic students

FISA shocker: DOJ official warned Steele dossier was connected to
Clinton, might be biased

AG pick Barr wants closer scrutiny of Silicon Valley 'behemoths'

Nancy Pelosi Charged Air Force Nearly $200k to Fly Her Family, Other
Lawmakers to Italy and Ukraine

Donald Trump banned her from using military aircraft, but the trip would

trip to Italy and Ukraine from July 30 to Aug. 6, 2015, cost the Air
Force 184,587.81, according to
documents
released Saturday under a 2015 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
lawsuit by Judicial Watch. Her delegation was made up of nine other
members of Congress,
including Democratic Reps. Anna Eshoo of California and Marcia Fudge of
Ohio. Four family members, including Pelosi's husband Paul Pelosi, were

Pelosi says she won't allow State of the Union during shutdown; Trump
will 'do something in the alternative'

known as

in the air after Pelosi threat

Trump cancels Nancy Pelosi foreign trip citing shutdown

with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the

Trump wrote. The president added that Mrs Pelosi could proceed with the
trip - which he described as a "public relations event" - using a
commercial airline.
McConnell sets up votes on Thursday on competing proposals to reopen
government

one backed by
Republicans and the other backed by Democrats and both likely to fail.
One of the votes will be on a proposal backed by Senate Majority Leader

judge teams to reduce court backlog of 900,000 cases. Additionally, the
president
proposed a three year extension for those with temporary protective status.
Supreme Court allows transgender military ban to be enforced |
22 Jan 2019 | The Supreme Court handed President Trump a partial win on
Tuesday, allowing the administration to temporarily enforce its
restrictions on
transgender people serving in the military. The court ruled 5-4 to stay
two district court orders that blocked the new policy, with the court's
liberal
wing dissenting. The justices said they are waiting for the 9th Circuit
Court of Appeals to weigh in. The Supreme Court's decision does leave
one nationwide
injunction on Trump's order in place. As a result, Pentagon officials
said they cannot completely implement the new policy yet.
White House announces 51 judicial picks, including two for liberal Ninth
Circuit
| 22 Jan 2019 | The White House on Tuesday announced the re-nomination
of 51 federal judicial nominees left over from the previous Congress,
kickstarting
the administration's effort to install more conservative judges after
GOP activists worried that such appointments had stalled. Nine of the 51
appointments
are for spots on prestigious and influential federal appellate benches,
including two on the mostly liberal San Francisco-based Ninth Circuit
Court of
Appeals, which President Trump has often derided as politically biased.
Trump administration to appeal ruling against 2020 census citizenship
question

Thursday declaring it is appealing a
federal judge's decision
that the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 census would
be unlawful. The notice did not give any information on the substance of
the administration's
appeal, but the Justice Department had argued that Commerce Sec. Wilbur
Ross had the authority to add the question to the census and that in the
past,
the question had been included. Ross
first announced in March
that he would return the citizenship question to the census, saying it
would better help the government enforce the Voting Rights Act.

administration's addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census,

first major ruling
in a controversy that has pitted states and cities against top
administration officials and is likely to come before the U.S. Supreme

M. Furman of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York [
appointed by President Barack Obama]
ordered the administration Tuesday to stop its plans to add the question
to the survey. Calling Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross's decision to add
the question
"arbitrary and capricious," he blasted Ross for "egregious" violations
of the Administrative Procedure Act.

grading with
a professor who serves as director of a writing center which argues that
American grammar is a "racist," "unjust language structure." The
seminar,
titled, "Grading Ain't Just Grading: Rethinking Writing Assessment
Ecologies Towards Antiracist Ends," will be led by University of
Washington-Tacoma professor
[but no scholar]
Asao Inoue,
who previously published an essay titled, "
A Grade-less Writing Course that Focuses on Labor and Assessing,"
in which he argues in favor of "dispens[ing] almost completely with
judgments of quality when producing course grades."
'Fox & Friends' accidentally shows graphic saying Ruth Bader Ginsburg is
dead
| 21 Jan 2019 | The hosts of "Fox & Friends" on Monday apologized for
showing a graphic saying Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is
dead, blaming
a control room error. The graphic, similar to those marking the deaths
of other famous figures, briefly showed a photo of Ginsburg and the
dates "1933-2019."
"We need to apologize. … A technical error in the control room triggered
a graphic of RBG with a date on it," co-host Steve Doocy
said later in the program.
Fire damages Fox, C-SPAN, MSNBC studios
| 20 Jan 2019 | A fire Sunday morning in Northwest Washington, D.C.,
damaged studios for Fox News, C-SPAN and MSNBC, and forced "Fox News
Sunday" to relocate
its broadcast to a local affiliate's studio. D.C. Fire and EMS tweeted
that an electrical fire broke out in the 8th floor television studio but
nobody
was injured. Steve Scully, the political editor for C-SPAN, tweeted
shortly after 7 a.m. that the Fox News and C-SPAN studios sustained
"extensive damage,"
and MSNBC's studio took on "extensive smoke and water damage."
Ebola outbreak in Eastern Congo, with at least 680 cases, is moving
toward a major city
| 19 Jan 2019 | At least 680 people have been infected with the Ebola
virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's the second-largest Ebola
outbreak
in history, with 414 deaths so far, and the first Ebola outbreak in an
active war zone, DRC's eastern North Kivu and Ituri provinces. But it
could get
worse: Health officials this week are concerned that Ebola appears to be
spreading in the direction of Goma, a major population center in DRC.
Just this
week, DRC's health ministry
confirmed
four cases of the deadly virus in Kayina, a town in North Kivu, amidst
fighting among rebel and militia groups.
