Dear Carl,
The Israeli elections are 5 days away, and candidates are seemingly
vying for who can be the worst.
Benjamin Netanyahu, who many thought couldn’t get any worse, forged an
opportunistic and morally despicable partnership with Jewish Power, a
group whose members openly advocate for the ethnic cleansing of
Palestinians. 1
His primary challenger, Benny Gantz, aired disgusting ads bragging
about how many Palestinians he killed in Gaza in 2014 during Israel’s
devastating military assault. 2
And then there’s New Right co-leader Ayelet Shaked’s outrageous ad,
where she sprays on “fascism” perfume and proclaims, “it smells like
democracy to me.” 3
These Israeli elections have become the most reprehensible, racist,
right-wing extreme version of Israeli politics.
As members of the Jewish diaspora, and as people everywhere who care
deeply about a just peace for all in Israel/Palestine, it’s our
responsibility to overwhelmingly reject this horrific, anti-Arab,
anti-Palestinian, anti-democratic vision.

Regardless of who leads the next government, it’s excruciatingly clear
that the status quo of brutal occupation, apartheid policies, and
illegal settlement-building will continue and possibly get worse.
So we say NO. And know that our work is cut out for us with whoever
wins these elections.
Our best response here in the U.S. is to continue bringing pressure to
change U.S. policy, and to support members of Congress, like the newly
elected Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, in their work
for human rights for all in Israel/Palestine.
These elections signal a desperate need for outside pressure –
including Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) – for any hope of
significant changes in Israeli policies towards Palestinians or
progress towards peace.
We unequivocally condemn the Israeli elections and vote NO.
