A deep dive into an emerging form of workplace democracy that can
create a pathway to dignity and collective agency

For a country that claims to be a democracy, it’s incredible that for
the overwhelming majority of people, having a job means leaving those
rights at the door of your workplace, day after day. It’s as if 40+
hours a week are spent inside some kind of extralegal grayzone, where
the tyranny of capital fully and unconditionally displaces the
pretense of self-government.

Traditionally, the form that worker power inside the workplace takes
has been the union, a countervailing collective voice that can stand
up for the rights of its members. Like an increasing number of
nonprofits on the left

, TRNN’s staff is unionized, represented by the Washington-Baltimore
NewsGuild. Outside of the nonprofit sector, however, the picture is
pretty grim: only one in ten

American workers have a union. But almost half of American workers
said they’d join a union tomorrow

if given the chance. In other words, there’s a pretty huge democracy
gap in this country’s workplaces.

How can we fill this gap? Recently, with the support of the Solutions
Journalism Network, TRNN’s Jaisal Noor had the opportunity to do a
deep dive into an emerging form of workplace democracy that goes
beyond just providing a workers’ counterweight to ownership and
management, and fully re-envisions the workplace as an active site of
democratic life. Profiling eight worker cooperatives in four cities

, he shows how democracy in these frontline workplaces
(https://wpengine.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8c539f24d4caee97756babeeb&id=3097df398a&e=a3a8902b92)
helped keep their worker-owners safe during the pandemic. (A
disclaimer: I helped co-found one

of the worker co-ops profiled.)

If you haven’t had a chance to watch Jaisal’s work on this yet, I
highly recommend taking a look
(https://wpengine.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=8c539f24d4caee97756babeeb&id=164a75ec83&e=a3a8902b92)
—we’ve got both a 25-minute complete feature, as well as more
bite-sized looks

at the individual cooperatives featured. One of the things that jumps
out for me is that the benefits of worker ownership Jaisal highlights
go far beyond just an equal share of the profits and a vote on big
decisions. Whether he’s exploring home care workers

in New York City, formerly incarcerated women

in Baltimore, it’s clear that worker ownership is also a pathway to
the kind of dignity and collective
agency that far too many people are structurally denied a chance at in
this country.

With your support

solutions like the ones Jaisal has highlighted here—and if you’ve
