[blind-democracy] Honoring Rachel Corrie: has it really been 15 years?

So many lives have been sacrificed that I can't begin to count them.
But Rachel Corrie's murder stays as fresh in my mind as if it happened
yesterday.
When I was a boy, I was fascinated by the stories I read in a set of
books my dad had in his book case, the Rise and Fall of the Roman
Empire.  In my boy's mind I marched and fought and slayed my enemies
and won the hand of many a fair maiden, while bringing glory to the
Empire.  It was not until I saw the suffering brought upon ordinary
people, in places like Vietnam
and Palestine, that I went back and took a deeper look at the cruelty
heaped upon those people conquered by Rome.  I began to wonder, even
as I had basked in the Glory that was Rome, just how many Rachel
Corries stood up against the mighty Roman Legions and gave their lives
trying to defend their homes.
As a boy, we played Cowboy and Injuns, never giving a thought to how
many real life people were slaughtered as our American Empire marched
across the land.  From Athens to Rome to London to Washington DC.,
each Empire becoming uglier and more oppressive than the last.  What
will the next Empire look like?

Dear Carl,

I remember so well this day fifteen years ago. We had all marched the
week before in the biggest demonstration I had ever seen against the
Iraq War, but the specter of war still hung over every moment.

Then the news came that a young woman named Rachel Corrie had been
killed by an Israeli soldier, run over by an enormous armed
Caterpillar bulldozer while she was protecting a Palestinian home.

I was deeply, truly shocked. I had already been a member of Jewish
Voice for Peace for a couple of years, but apparently I had not yet
absorbed the reality of what kind of violence Israel was capable of,
even against unarmed American volunteers.

I thought endlessly about Rachel’s parents--what they were going
through, and what they had done to raise a child of such principle and
determination.

A few years later, when I met Cindy and Craig Corrie for the first
time, I got my answer. Their response to Rachel’s horrifying death was
to turn to community and solidarity in solace. Their unfailing
kindness and steadfast commitment in the face of greatest personal
tragedy inspires each and every person I have seen them interact with.

Will you join me in thanking Cindy and Craig--in remembrance of their
beautiful daughter, and for all the incredible, impactful work and
relationships they have brought to our movement in the last 15 years?
