POSITION TITLE: Director of Outreach and Advocacy

POSITION SUMMARY: Under general direction of the VP
Outreach, Admissions, and Alumni Services, the Director of Outreach
and Advocacy provides leadership in developing and implementing
strategies, policies and programs to effectively enhance Guide Dogs
for the Blind’s efforts in broadening client outreach and support,
serving the visually impaired community, and advocating for policies,
laws and programs that support GDB’s mission.
Essential Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
The Director of Outreach and Advocacy will build a network of
organizations which work with individuals who are blind, consumer
groups, and others related to Guide Dogs for the Blind’s mission to
support and advocate for organizational objectives. The Director of
O&A will represent GDB on coalitions of agencies serving the blind
and persons with other disabilities.
Develop, implement and sustain strategies, plans and programs that
enhance GDB’s outreach efforts for client recruitment.
In collaboration with GDB’s Marketing team the Director of O&A will
develop, implement, and maintain effective marketing plans and
strategies designed to provide outreach to qualified candidates
resulting in GDB’s ability to serve more individuals in accordance
with organizational goals and objectives. Ensure that marketing and
outreach efforts are effective through research and analytics. Update
and communicate plans accordingly.
Monitor local, state, and federal pending legislation, existing laws,
and corporate policies that may impact persons working with guide dogs
and service animals. Under the guidance of the VP of OAA and the
Executive Team develop GDB’s response and implement strategies and
plans accordingly.
In collaboration with the VP of OAA and under direction of the CEO
and Executive Team, prepare correspondence and background papers
reflecting GDB’s positions and concerns on issues that impact guide
dog handlers and potential clients.
Develop, present and disseminate information to educate others about
the needs and capabilities of guide dog handlers.
Serve as liaison with the Outreach and Advocacy Committee of the
Alumni Association Board of Directors to identify, plan and undertake
advocacy initiatives.
In collaboration with the VP of OAA serve as a spokesperson for the
organization via various media including radio, TV, and print to
advance the mission of GDB.
Collaborate with the VP of OAA to communicate department goals,
needs, and successes to the board, Executive Team and other relevant
parties.
Supervise and manage the performance of Outreach Specialists
(Community Outreach Specialist and Youth Outreach Specialist)
Develop and administer approved outreach budget effectively. Create
systems for tracking program successes to determine best return on
investment and make program adjustments as necessary.
Undertake other duties as assigned.
POSITION ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Current Guide Dog user from Guide Dogs for the Blind highly desirable
Bachelor’s degree in public policy, rehabilitation or other
position-related academic program: a graduate degree is preferred.
A minimum of five years position-related experience
Model all GDB values and behaviors and hold others accountable to do the same.
Ability to create, steward, and rally support behind a vision, to
think “big picture”
A record of leadership in working with blind and visually impaired
individuals, groups, and organizations
Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and work
effectively and collaboratively with others to solve complex issues
Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills; and
the ability to manage priorities and workflow
Strong supervisory experience and the ability to recruit, train,
provide direction, effective feedback and support professional
development of staff and volunteers.
Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrate strong presentation skills and ability to engage and
influence a wide array of audiences. Ability to gain others support
for ideas, proposals, projects and solutions.
Strong knowledge of or ability to acquire in depth knowledge
regarding national rehabilitation programs for the blind: stay
current on how policies, laws, and pending legislation may impact
guide dog handlers.
Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends
and to travel throughout the United States and Canada approximately
30% of the time.
Intermediate to advanced skills using Microsoft office products such
as Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint etc. Ability to use databases,
voicemail, braille, JAWS and other tools used by individuals who are
visually impaired
