This isn't going to happen under anyone's administration because we now have an
international economic system controlled by the IMF, international banks,
international corporations, and in particular, technology used in the service
of the control of populations and world wide communication. Two examples of how
much things have changed, came to my attention recently. There's a reality show
that people watch. Now remember, people who watch these reality shows believe
that they are truly reality being videoed. They do not understand that these
are situations, acted by actors. This show is called, Undercover, or something
like that. It shows CEO's of corporations, working undercover in their
corporations as workers so that they can see for themselves, how their
businesses are run. The episode that this person I know watched, showed how
badly the workers were being treated. Think about that for a minute. This is
considered to be entertainment. The people who watch it think that they're
seeing a real boss who has just found out the truth about how poorly his
workers are being treated, and he's now going to fix things. There is no
message to the audience that most of wat they buy is made by workers who are
mistreated all over the world and that there's something wrong with the system.
They actually feel that they'v been informed after watching this program and
they feel good that there are these CEO's all over the country, watching out
for their workers.
The other thing is a description of medical care in a poor coastal Maine town
in 1947 that is in a new novel by Anita Shreeve. A new doctor has taken over
the practice of a retiring GP. This medical practice is the only medical care
available for the surrounding communities. Patients appear each day, many
without appointments. They are seen all day, one after another from morning to
night. There's a room where very sick patients can be kept and cared for if
they have high fevers or need to be quarantined. The doctor is on duty 24 hours
a day. He deals with all sorts of issues, and gets to know all of his patients.
He charges them on a sliding scale that he has devised. No one goes without
treatment, even if they cannot pay. And that was what rural medicine was like
in the 40's.

Yes, WPA is a good example.
When my dad came over to Seattle from Spokane in order to find work back in
1937, he landed a job and moved us into a drafty old rental house just in time
to lose the job. Dad walked the streets. Once he took a job as a cook on an
ocean-going tug, and couldn't get word to mother for three days. She thought
he'd been murdered. But finally, as the war began, he went to work on WPA,
digging ditches at the Bremerton ship yard. The Ferry ride took an hour each
way, and dad took a correspondence course in radio repair. For several years I
shared my bedroom with dad's repair bench and shelves of various pieces of
equipment and broken radios. WPA had fulfilled its purpose.
Another struggling bread winner on his feet and Dad never looked back.
The thing was, WPA was good for the entire nation. Fiscally conservative
businessmen were used to raking in the money, not paying it out. But hording
did no one good at all. Moving money around kept us all fed, warm and busy.
Naturally, this is not going to happen under the Trump dynasty.

FDR's WPA, that's what you're talking about. All kinds of jobs from
manual labor to dramatic productions, funded by government, all
fulfilling the needs of our people. But the US doesn't do that sort of
thing anymore. It privatizes everything, including functions that were
performed by our military, even public schools. Our country is so far
from where it was in the 40's, 50's, and 60's in terms of how our
economic system works that it's almost inconceivable. Do you remember
when weekends were actually weekends, time off when nobody worked,
nobody shopped, nobody made business calls? Do you remember when there
was one breadwinner in the family who worked one job, 40 hours a week? Do you
remember when soldiers did KP?

When I was teaching Braille at the Orientation and Training
Center(OTC), I used to lecture my students about the benefits afforded
those "lucky" young men and women who served in the armed forces.
Low interest loans with no down payment through the VA, lifetime
medical care, free schooling, commissary benefits, and on and on. I
said that if I were younger, I would volunteer to serve my country.
Then, when the recruiting office rejected me, I would sue, declaring
that my Rights had been violated. I would argue that Blindness was
being used to keep me from the many benefits I would receive if I
served. Not a single student of mine ever tried enlisting.
Today I would never encourage anyone to enlist. Not even with tongue
in cheek. But what I do advocate is a civilian service that offers
the same benefits as the military. Young men and women could join and
serve their country doing a multitude of jobs right here in the good
old USA. We've allowed our nation to slide into disrepair, and it
will take many years and many hands to put it right again.
Of course we will get absolutely no support from our Billionaires.
They only pretend to care for the nation, but when push comes to
shove, they are busy taking. So we also need to learn from them.
Taking their ill gotten gains would be plenty to get a good start on
returning our nation to those "Great Days" of the past. And if we run
a bit short, well there's plenty of billions falling out of the
Pentagon's coffers. Heck, they lose billions without even worrying
about it. And the good news is that there would be plenty of jobs
that could be handled by blind people. Yes, when Johnny comes
marching home again, maybe he'll trade in his rifle for a shovel, a rake and
a hammer.

Also, there aren't that many jobs these days, You get food and a
salary in the military. Sometimes it pays for college.

Dear Beleaguered Friends...and Others.
Things may be looking up, if we can just take the latest Tweet from
Donald Trump at face value. After discussing the matter with his
generals, Donald Trump, in his position as Leader of the Pack...Oops,
as Commander in Chief, has declared that Transgender Americans will
no longer be allowed to serve in the USA's Military.
Now if we can convince Mister Commander in Chief to declare Gay's to
be banned, followed by the Tender Sex(His term for Women), and
finally all boys under the age of 25, we might be onto something
radical. I believe with all of my brain, that those wanting their
interests protected, should be the first to head the charge into
battle. No one in the Jarvis Tribe has anything to gain,
financially, from putting their lives on the line. But the Koch
Brothers? Now there's a bunch of folks who have everything to lose.
And along with the fellows down at the Billionaire's Club, including
the "Great Pretender" Donald Trump, those are the fellows who should
be out on maneuvers. Besides, shouldn't those who have the most to
lose, and have lived long enough to enjoy it, and have the interest
of their own children, grandchildren and beyond, at heart, be
prepared to lay down their lives, rather than the lives of my
children, grandchildren and beyond, who have little to gain besides a Heroes
Death?
Well, I suppose someone by now is thanking their God that Carl Jarvis
doesn't have a Twitter account, or an Oval Office from which to Tweet
his rants.
It's going to be in the mid 80's today, out here on the Great Olympic
Peninsula. A perfect day to take these creaky old bones into the
lovely fresh air of this glorious Wilderness and fill pot holes in
our quarter mile road. Certainly this activity will be far more
productive than standing by, waiting for President Trump's next tantrum.
And by the way, if anyone can find today's Flashpoint, it's well
worth hearing Josh Green discussing his interviews with Russian
President Vladimir Putin. He presents a rather more believable
image of what appears to be a competent leader, rather than the comic
character the Corporate Media presents.
