Nadelaine joined our household yesterday. Although she's just under a year
of age, she's head a rather unsettled life. She was born in North Carolina
during a hurricane and because she had no family, or at least, not one that
could care for her, she was placed in a shelter. But then more residents
were added and there was no more room in the shelter, so she was transferred
to an associated shelter located in Suffolk County, Long Island. That is
where my younger daughter found her and decided to adopt her. No, Madelaine
is not human. She's feline. However, she is in excellent health, and has had
all appropriate medical care. Before my daughter was permitted to take her
home, she had to complete a questionnaire and submit references, all of whom
were contacted. She had to agree to comply with certain requirements like
bringing Madelaine to a specific animal doctor in 3 weeks for a checkup.
People who have been told about all of this, express delight that Melanie
has acquired a cat and they are very positively impressed with the care that
the shelter staff has taken to ensure Madelaine's welfare. I've been
pondering all of this for the past few days and comparing it to the lack of
any discussion at all among those same people, of our government's treatment
of human beings who were not born within our borders , human beings who've
been forced to leave their homes because of unendurable circumstances. No
one has mentioned the death of two children.
