Audio Description on TV
Vision Australia, Blind Citizens Australia and other organisations are working
on the Sector Report following the end of the I-View trial. We expect that the
ABC's own report will be provided to the Government fairly soon. Once our
report is complete we will be seeking discussion with the Minister about the
next steps.
There is also work underway to develop a proposal for amending the Broadcasting
Services Act 1992 to include similar requirements for audio description as it
does now for captions. This work is not being done by the Government, but we
hope that it will help to increase awareness of audio description and suggest
how it could be implemented on television in Australia.
Vision Australia have also been continuing our discussions with the Greens
about how this proposal could be promoted, and the best way for us to raise
awareness of audio description in the new parliament, including among the new
cross-benchers.
I'll keep you updated when there is further news to report.
