When will the payments start?
Payments of Carer Allowance (child) for children with Type 1 Diabetes as a
condition on the List of Recognised Disabilities will be paid from 3 September
2011.

Will my payments be backdated?
The List of Recognised Disabilities will be retrospectively amended from 1 July
2011.

This means that all carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes up to the age of 16
will qualify from 1 July 2011 for Carer Allowance (Child).

Payments to carers who are deemed eligible from 1 July 2011 (ie those in
receipt of Carer Allowance Health Care Card only from 1 July 2011) will be
backdated to 1 July 2011.

New claims for Carer Allowance from people who do not already have a Carer
Allowance Health Care Card only for their child with Type 1 Diabetes can be
backdated up to 12 weeks.  This means that new claims must be registered with
Centrelink by 23 September 2011 to be backdated to 1 July 2011 if the child
would have qualified the carer on 1 July 2011.

If you are unsure about your particular circumstance, contact Centrelink on 13
2717 to discuss your eligibility.

Why do I have to wait until September to get my payments?
It will take some time to implement the necessary changes to ensure you can be
paid. We're happy to take your claim now and if you are eligible, your payments
will start as soon as possible after the 3 September 2011.

Will I receive the Carer Supplement and the Child Disability Assistance Payment?
If you qualify for Carer Allowance (child) on 1 July 2011 under the amended
List of Recognised Disabilities and you are backpaid to 1 July 2011 you will
also receive Carer Supplement and Child Disability Assistance Payment.

Do I need to lodge a new claim?
Carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes who currently receive Carer Allowance
(child) will not have to do anything – Centrelink will amend their status to
ensure payments do not cease.

Carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes over the age of 10 years who are
currently in receipt of a Health Care Card only for their child will
automatically receive Carer Allowance (child).

Carers of children aged under 16 with Type 1 Diabetes who currently do not
receive Carer Allowance (child) and do not have a Health Care Card for their
child will need to lodge a claim form with Centrelink to receive Carer
Allowance (child).

If you would like to lodge a claim you can do so now. If you are eligible you
will be issued with a Health Care Card once your claim has been processed.
Claims lodged prior to 23 September 2011 will be backdated to 1 July 2011 with
payments starting as soon as possible after 3 September 2011.

Carers of children with Type 1 Diabetes can contact Centrelink if they have
questions about their eligibility.

Will I be reviewed?
You may receive forms or letters from Centrelink about reviews and/or
cancellations between now and 3 September 2011.  If you are unsure about your
situation or about what you should do, contact Centrelink on 13 2717.

What happens when my child turns 16?
Carers of people with disability aged 16 and over are assessed under the Adult
Disability Assessment Tool for eligibility for Carer Allowance.  Centrelink
will contact you when your child is about to turn 16.
