Hi everyone,

Below is a Report from Disability Advocacy Network Australia. There is
interesting information here including what is happening around Australia

1.. Advocacy for Inclusion featured on ABC news: In early June, the staff and
clients of Advocacy for Inclusion in Canberra were prominently featured in a
story about the NDIS on 7:30 ACT. General Manager Christina Ryan and
self-advocates Rebecca Medcalf and Brianna Smith are interviewed, giving
insight into the hopes and challenges associated with the approaching
transition to the scheme.
2.. Advocate responds to life's big questions on ABC Open: The ABC Open
website features community made stories from around Australia, some of which
are broadcast on television. Michele Castagna, from Disability Advocacy Service
in Alice Springs, has contributed a story of her first experience of not being
given "a fair go". This short video gives insight into the personal
ramifications of disability discrimination and exclusion.
3.. Self-advocate interviewed about DSP in The Australian: Last month, The
Australian newspaper interviewed Judy Huett (who works part-time for Speak Out
Tasmania) about her experiences of the Disability Support Pension and finding
flexible work and fair pay. Last year, Judy gave a presentation at the DANA
Conference about her international disability rights advocacy, as part of the
Civil Society delegation to the United Nations on the Committee on the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities.
4.. Ramp Up column by Chairman of Aboriginal Disability Network NSW: Jake
Briggs is the Chairman of the Aboriginal Disability Network NSW and is one of
the five Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with disability featured
in this 15 minute documentary, launched by the organisation in March. The
Living My Way film and workshops aim to increase awareness and support
Indigenous people and communities to prepare for the NDIS. Read Jake's column
on Ramp Up.
5.. Young advocates represent Australia at CRPD Conference of State Parties:
A delegation of young Australians last week appeared at the United Nations
Conference of State Parties discussing progress on the Convention of the Rights
of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). You can watch interviews with the young
advocates, and find out more on the Australian Human Rights Commission website.
The chosen delegates include Desiree Johnson of Speak Out Tasmania and National
Council on Intellectual Disability, and Ace Boncato from Multicultural
Disability Advocacy Association and National Ethnic Disability Alliance and
five other young advocates.
6.. Nominations open for National Disability Awards: Nominations have opened
for the 2014 National Disability Awards, to be held on 25 November 2014 at
Parliament House. Of particular interest to advocates is the "Improving
Advocacy and Rights Promotion Award", however the achievements of advocates may
be recognised in other award categories, which align with the Outcome areas of
the National Disability Strategy, and also recognise "Lifetime Achievement" and
"Emerging Leaders". Find out more about making a nomination on the
International Day of People with Disability website. Nominations close on July
18, 2014.
7.. Nominations open for Human Rights Awards: Nominations have also opened
for the 2014 Human Rights Awards. The Australian Human Rights Commission
encourages you to nominate individuals or organisations working to advance
human rights and freedoms in Australia. Disability advocates have previously
been recognised as finalists and winners - for instance, Carolyn Frohmader won
the Community Individual Award in 2013 for her human rights advocacy for women
and girls with disabilities in her role as executive director of Women With
Disabilities Australia (WWDA). Journalists have also been recognised in past
awards for drawing attentions to particular human rights abuses of people with
disabilities: the Radio Award went to Nance Haxton in 2012 for "Intellectually
Disabled People Fight for Access to Justice" on ABC Radio National, and in
2011, Adele Horin won the Print and Online Media Award for her piece in Fairfax
Newspapers about people living in licensed boarding houses in NSW: "The sad
truth behind closed doors".
8.. Artists with disabilities - respond creatively to discrimination: Through
video, photography, painting or performance, share your experience of
Discrimination: the good, the bad, the ugly! This exhibition will be delivered
as a one hour feature session at the Arts Activated 2014 conference, and will
include a fully accessible audience experience. Applications are invited from
established and emerging artists, performers, musicians, cultural organisations
and community groups. Applications will close on Friday 25 July 2014.
9.. Young Victorians with disabilities - learn your rights, become a leader:
Youth Disability Advocacy Service in Melbourne last month launched a new online
resource designed to empower young Victorians with disabilities to know and
defend their rights. Youth Disability Rights Hub also allows people to ask
questions and submit their success stories. The YDAS Steering Committee is
currently taking applications from people aged 12-25 who are passionate about
youth disability issues, and want to drive action and have a say.
10.. Criminal Justice barriers for people with disability: Last week, the
South Australian Government launched the State's Disability Justice Plan
2014-2017. DANA hopes other jurisdictions will undertake human rights based
review of their criminal laws and processes, and create and implement
disability justice strategies, as recommended by the Disability Discrimination
Commissioner in this Report. In Monday's Rights Talk on balancing the scales of
justice, Graeme Innes again called for people to submit programs and services
that assist people with disability in the criminal justice systems, to further
develop a central national list.
