Deaf Australia has appointed Kyle Miers as its new chief executive officer
(CEO), replacing Karen Lloyd, who retired in February 2014
Miers has been a board member of Deaf Australia for nine years, and was its
president for five years. He is currently Manager, Community Relations for Deaf
Children Australia, and is also the secretary of the World Federation of the
Deaf, Oceania.
Miers said, "I'm honoured to accept this position, and I will be proud to build
on past Deaf Australia successes to keep the deaf community a strong one and
advance the rights of deaf people Australia-wide."
Miers has long been an advocate for captioning. He was involved with the
negotiations which saw Free TV, and later subscription TV, introducing staged
caption quotas, the precursor to quotas being legislated as part of amendments
to the Broadcasting Services Act which were passed in 2012. He was also a
consumer representative on the consultative group put together by the
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) as it formulated its
caption quality standard, and a member of the Australian Cinema Advisory Group.
"I am pleased that Deaf Australia has chosen an experienced caption advocate as
its new CEO," said Alex Varley, CEO of Media Access Australia. "Kyle has been
involved in many actions across the last ten years around captions for TV, DVD,
cinema and strong involvement in caption quality deliberations.
