Funding boost for Deaf Sports Australia

July 5, 2012

Minister for Sport Kate Lundy today announced the Australian Government will provide an extra $100,000 in funding to Deaf Sports Australia to support the national roll out of its junior participation program.

Senator Lundy said the Active Deaf Kids program was successfully piloted in Victoria in 2010 and was designed to provide a pathway for hearing impaired youth to get involved in sporting activities.

"The Active Deaf Kids program is about levelling the playing field so kids with hearing impairment can get involved and participate in sport," Senator Lundy said.

"Sport is a wonderful platform for inclusion and I commend Deaf Sports Australia for developing this program to overcome the barriers to participation faced by deaf children.

"The goal of the program is to increase participation in sport among secondary school students who are deaf or hearing impaired and it is an important initiative that will improve the quality of life for young people keen to get active and play sport with their mates."

The extra funding will support the existing program of visits to specialist deaf schools and mainstream schools with deaf support units.

Senator Lundy said it will also support the commissioning of independent expert advice on hearing devices to address safety concerns.

"Deaf Sports Australia plays a lead role in educating parents, schools and national sporting organisations about the needs of young deaf people keen to play sport," Senator Lundy said.

"Through their hard work at a national level they are steadily increasing the opportunities for deaf children and young people to participate in more sporting activities."

Deaf Sports Australia is the national peak body for deaf sport in Australia with four state members and 12 national member organisations for deaf sport including basketball, lawn bowls, cricket, darts, 8-ball, golf, netball, football, squash, aquatics, tennis and tenpin bowling.
