Direct from the 2014 Academy Awards where it
was nominated in the Best Documentary Feature, Opening Night film The Square
takes audiences right to the heart of a movement, a country and a people
committed to the ideals of freedom and human rights. Assembled from footage
filmed in, alongside and after the Egyptian Revolution, Jehane Noujaim’s film
documents a small band of activists' struggle as they seek to overthrow the
powers that be.

After the film kick on at The Kelvin Club with
complimentary drinks, food and entertainment at the Opening Night after-party!

The Closing Night program features the 2014
Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning Rich Hill, a documentary that explores the
challenges three adolescent boys face growing up in a deteriorating town. As
they navigate the hardships of poverty, broken families and mental illness
along with the regular challenges of being a teenager, their belief in a
brighter future makes this an extraordinarily moving and uplifting film.

This year’s Spotlight film is The Internet’s
Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz. This film pioneers a discussion on the new
frontier of human rights as it pertains to the freedom of information in the
digital age. The CineSeeds program for children and their parents continues
this year with a screening of Jaques-Remy Girerd’s Mia and the Migoo in French
with English subtitles. A multiple Award-winner at the time of its original
release in 2009, Migoo brings important environmental issues to life with
breathtaking animation.

The centrepiece of the 2014 Arts program is
Vietnam/Australia: Voicing the Unspoken, a co-presentation with Multicultural
Arts Victoria. This exhibition brings together five contemporary artists whose
practices are informed by their links to Vietnam and Australia. This is just
one of four inspiring visual arts exhibitions, for full details on the visual
arts program click here.

HRAFF is also pleased to present a collection
of industry-focussed forums including a masterclass by Ian Darling. For more
details on HRAFF’s free industry events click here

This is just the beginning of the HRAFF 2014

Featuring 25 screenings in Melbourne, 20 On
Tour screenings, 15 Feature Length Australian Premieres, 14 outstanding shorts
and a curated look back at Soviet Propaganda, the HRAFF 2014 film program is
set to inspire, challenge and leave our audiences buzzing with new ideas.

Highlights of this year's program include a
moving declaration of love from a father to his daughter who has a rare
developmental disorder in Alphee of the Stars, and a behind-the-scenes portrait
of male performers as they create a theatrical love letter to their mothers in
Sons and Mothers. You'll have the opportunity to meet people willing to put
their bodies on the line in a kaleidoscopic exploration of non-violent protest
across the world in Everyday Rebellion, and get an insight into religious
fundamentalism in the post-colonial world as you follow a group of young
Americans on their first Mission to Uganda in God Loves Uganda.

This year's Visual Arts program is stronger
than ever! As well as our partnership Multicultural Arts Victoria collaboration
for Vietnam/Australia: Voicing the Unspoken we will be screening a special
exhibiting documentary Our Tree on the Federation Square Big Screen.

Once again we have partnered with The Dax
Centre to present Healing Ways: Art with Intent. This curated exhibition
showcases the intergenerational effects of trauma experienced by Aboriginal
people throughout a history of colonisation and dispossession. A special
exhibition preview and guided tour with curator Charlotte Christie will be held
on Tuesday 20 May at 6:00pm.

HRAFF are also proud to announce Next Wave
Festival as our co-presenter for the powerful exhibition Lesser Gods, an
immersive amalgamation of sound, moving image and interactivity by the young
indigenous artist Ryan Presley at No Vacancy Gallery Fed Square.
