Welcome to the first edition of the Human Rights and Technology Newsletter
where you can keep up to date with the Commission’s Human Rights and Technology
(RightsTech) project.
It’s been an exciting couple of months. We brought together some incredible
thinkers and leaders at an international conference that explored the human
rights implications of artificial intelligence, big data and a host of new
technologies. We also released an Issues Paper to help people participate in
our consultation.
As we look ahead, we are looking to you. We aim to create a roadmap for
responsible innovation in Australia and we are looking to benefit from a
diversity of views - from industry, government, civil society and academia.
We’re doing that through round tables and submissions. I encourage everybody
with something to contribute on the relationship between technology and human
rights to get involved. We’re listening.
Edward Santow
Human Rights Commissioner
Three weeks left to have your say
Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow launched an Issues Paper at the
RightsTech conference on July 24, marking the beginning of the project’s
consultation phase. In the Paper, we explore how human rights are both
strengthened and compromised by new technology. We ask how these technologies
are impacting your life and work, and what we can do in Australia to protect
our human rights. Have your say by 2 October 2018.
Missed the conference? Listen to the Inclusion Riders: People with Disability
ABC’s Big Ideas produced a podcast from the conference’s ‘Inclusion Riders’
panel, which explored the challenges and opportunities presented by new
technologies for people living with disability. Listen to Disability
Discrimination Commissioner Alastair McEwin, Emma Bennison from Blind Citizens
Australia and Manisha Amin from the Centre for Inclusive Design discuss their
experiences with technology and hopes for emerging technologies for people with
disability.

"Not since the time that I got my first personal computer in 1988 have I
experienced such a strong emotional response to a piece of technology as I have
to [augmented reality glasses]."

United Nations examines rights in the digital future
The UN recently announced a High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation to
contribute to the broader public debate on the importance of cooperative and
interdisciplinary approaches to ensure a safe and inclusive digital future for
all.
The panel aims to raise awareness about the transformative impact of
technology, identify policy and knowledge gaps and present proposals to
strengthen cooperation in the digital space.
