The Self Advocacy and Peer Support WA (SAPS) group is made up of people with disabilities who want to share resources and information and support each other in advocacy. The group aims to connect self advocacy and peer support groups of people with disabilities already in existence, and link in people with disability not connected to these groups. The SAPS group is supported by state peak body, People with Disabilities WA; however we are run by and for people with disability, we are not a service provider or a part of the disability services sector, and we are deliberately about support for people with disability as individuals not families and carers. Using a small grant, we are seeking to: - Develop a database of and connect with groups across Western Australia; - Create new partnerships that result in a range of opportunities for people to participate, e.g. forums, conferences, training, professional development, peer support, and develop topical conversations; - Provide a forum for groups across the state to connect and consider partnerships. We have a SAPS Facebook page for people with disability to connect around this important area of peer support, and through which we can ask leading and key questions about topics of interest, seek interested and committed people to develop a calendar of events, and support each other to better connect with community.
