We bought a 'BT Call guardian' phone a few weeks ago and it works okay. It can
stop all nuisance calls!
It lets through calls from your contact numbers and from any other number you
have 'allowed'. It also 'announces' calls from unknown numbers (including
withheld and international calls).
The only problem we foresee is when you need to get a call from an anonymous
number (or a machine) - about a hospital appointment for example. You can
solve this by turning off the Call Guardian temporarily, but you have to go
through several menu screens to do it!
Otherwise we would recommend this kind of phone.

Hi,
I have just received a report about a telephone scam.
A message would come from telephone number 0118 9049938.
The message would say that there is a call waiting and to press any key
to receive the call.
The message is spoken by a well spoken male.
Advice is not to respond.
The alert did not say why not to respond but I guess it is because doing
so would then incur a large cost.
Also, if you are plagued by nuisance calls there is a B.T. Call Guardian
Phone available that guarantees no nuisance calls. It can be purchased
via the web or from places like Currys.
A caller would have to say their name and press the hash key. The phone
then rings and tells the recipient who is on the line. Nuisance calls
apparently don't have this capacity.
