I vaguely remember that Freecycle had a lot of issues around 'internal
politics' a few years ago, and many volunteers complained about it becoming
very hierarchical and authoritarian. The long and short of that was the
setting up of a new network called Freegle, which does the same thing, but
without the 'corporate logos' etc approach.
So if you need stuff or want to get rid of some, you can try Freegle - it's
a Yahoo group. We've used it and found it ok.
If you're concerned about getting your email hacked, just set up a separate
account for your subscription.
