Join us May 18th and 19th at our *7th Annual Corporate Partners Meeting
in Pittsburgh*. This year's theme is Continuous Improvement of Learner
Outcomes through Evidenced Based Resources & Tools.
We are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be Larry
Rudman, Vice President of Instructional Design and Research at Kaplan.
Larry Rudman received his BA from Yale in 1989, and as a member of the
first Teach for America class received a first-hand education in
teaching in Brooklyn middle schools. He then pursued his doctorate in
Human Development and Psychology at the Harvard Graduate School of
Education. Previously employed by educational software company Sunburst
Technology, Larry has been with Kaplan for the past eight years,
overseeing asset development and leading the Learning Sciences Team. He
was appointed VP of Instructional Design and Research in November 2013,
and continues to work closely with top-flight international researchers.
At this meeting, you and your colleagues will learn about the latest
learning science and educational technology tools and research underway
at Carnegie Mellon University. Attendees will also have the opportunity
to meet and recruit our current graduate students and post docs in the
learning sciences as well as our Professional Masters in Educational
Technology and Applied Learning Science (METALS) students. *There is no

*Some of the OER & Tools Available*
* *The Open Learning Initiatve (OLI)* is a fully instrumented LTI comp
liant platform for course development, delivery and continuous
improvement complete with an instructor dashboard. Courses developed
in OLI are intneded to be textbook replacements that are
continuously improved and updated. Courses are fully specified.
Learning objectives and sub-objectives map to instructional
materials and activities; activities map to problem steps which map
to knowledge components. All user actions are captured for data
analysis and course improvement. Through the instructor dashboard at
a micro level, instructors can see which topics students are finding
difficult and tailor their lesson accordingly. At a macro level,
learning curves indicate potential areas for improvement in the
course. Course creation is done through a WYSIWYG interface. Units
and modules in courses can be mixed and matched. More than 27
courses currently exist in subjects from Statistics to Chinese to

* *DataShop (Learnsphere)* is the world's largest repository of
educational data. Tightly integrated with OLI, DataShop's
sophisticated analysis and reporting tools are the key to OL\ I's
continuous course improvement. To date nearly 600,000 hours of
student data is available in 1356 datasets. Through LearnSphere.org

* *Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tool (CTAT)* is used to create the vast
majority of the adaptive tutors used in the OLI platform. By drawing
on the idea of programming by demonstration and structured editing,
CTAT enables the creation of example based tutors without any
programming. Experts and novices are able to create tutors in a tiny
fraction of the time normally required by programmers. See

* *LearnLab* is Carnegie Mellon University's research and training
center that focuses on advancing a practical science of robust
student learning. LearnLab has conducted over 600 studies and
produced over 2000 publications. LearnLab's two main goals are to
enhance scientific understanding of robust learning in educational
settings and to create a research facility to support field-based
experimentation, data collection and data mining. LearnLab is
advancing both basic research on learning in knowledge-rich settings
and applied research by contributing to a scientific basis for the
design and engineering of educational approaches that should have a

*Masters of Educational Technology and Applied Learning Science (METALS)
Opportunities* METALS is a one-year, interdisciplinary masters program
that trains graduate students to apply evidence-based research in
learning to create effective instruction and educational technologies
within formal and informal settings such as schools, workplaces, and
museums.

* *Sponsor a Capstone Project* METALS culminates with a seven capstone
project for an external client. Guided by industry and faculty
mentors in this team-based research and development project,
students experience the end-to-end process of a product cycle from
idea through prototyping. The teams apply the techniques, theories,
and methodologies that they have mastered in the program to deliver
