****************************************************************** --- apologies for cross-posting --- ****************************************************************** 4th International Workshop on INTELLIGENT SUPPORT IN EXPLORATORY ENVIRONMENTS (ISEE@EC-TEL'10) http://link.lkl.ac.uk/isee-ectel10 to be held in conjunction with the Fifth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning "Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice" Barcelona (Spain), 28 September-1 October 2010 IMPORTANT DATES: Abstract deadline: June 20th Submission deadline: June 27th Notification of acceptance: July 11th Camera-ready version: July 31st Workshop: 28th/29th September, Learning Café Methodology OBJECTIVES There is a growing research interest in Exploratory Learning Environments (ELEs). ELEs can be contrasted with more traditional intelligent systems that are oriented to well-defined tasks and domains, and generally constraint the learning trajectory by prescribing the sequence of steps and tasks that the learners undertake. ELEs have been found to be particularly beneficial in terms of providing opportunities for acquiring deep, conceptual and structural knowledge. However, there are several factors that can impede appropriate learning within an ELE, and a crucial determinant of learning is the nature of support provided by teachers, peers, technologies and the structure of the learning activities. There has been a lot of work in the learning science literature about support for learning in ELEs, but developing the technology to support learning processes faces several impressive challenges. On this edition of the workshop, the focus is on using intelligently supported exploratory environments in ecologically valid situations, e.g. integrated in a classroom or workplace. What are the main challenges that are faced when exploratory environments are taken out of the lab and faced with real-world learners? How can they be overcome? And how can these systems be evaluated? We encourage researchers to submit papers related to these questions and the topics listed below. Additional information about the challenges of providing intelligent support for exploratory environments can be found at the workshop web page at http://link.lkl.ac.uk/isee. The web page also enumerates the research questions that will be the focus of the workshop. This edition builds on the success of the former three editions of ISEE at EC-TEL'08, AIEd'09, and ICLS'10. TOPICS OF INTEREST (but not limited to) - Adaptive feedback for exploratory tasks - Design of exploratory learning environments - User, domain, and task modelling in exploratory environments - Technical and pedagogical Evaluation of support for explorative environments - Authoring of open-ended tasks with intelligent support - Modelling based on open-ended tasks - Fuzzy and probabilistic techniques for modelling - Educational data mining in exploratory environments - Sequencing of activities in open learning environments - Support for teachers in blended learning scenarios - Collaborative tools for open environments - Collaborative learning in open environments WORKSHOP FORMAT The workshop will be discussion-oriented framed around specific questions. The aim therefore is to have fruitful discussion prior and during the workshop rather than a mini-conference format. In particular, the methodology used will be based on an adaptation of the 'learning discussion forum' (aka Learning Cafe Methodology) which involves experts' introductions and group discussions ensuring that all participants can have a direct impact in addressing the workshop questions. This methodology has been successfully implemented in previous editions of ISEE, with good feedback from participants. More details of this methodology are given at the workshop web page (http://link.lkl.ac.uk/isee/) SUBMISSION Authors should submit papers that clearly address one or more of the questions to be explored at the workshop. All submissions will be refereed by the Programme Committee in order to decide on acceptance based on originality, clarity, and relevance to the community. Full papers should should be 8-10 pages long and short papers should be up to 5 pages. Authors should follow the same template that is used for the main conference. All papers should be formatted according to Springer-Verlag LNCS guidelines. LaTeX and word templates can be found at the Springer-Verlag website (http://www.springer.com/lncs). Accepted papers will be incluided the workshop proceedings, to be published as part of the CEUR Workshop proceedings series (CEUR-WS.org is a recognized ISSN publication series, with ISSN 1613-0073). Papers will be discussed prior to the workshop and form the basis for the discussions on the day of the workshop. Selected papers will also be invited to submit extended versions for a journal special issue (details to be confirmed at a later stage). Papers should be sent by email to isee.submission@xxxxxxxxxx PROGRAM COMMITTEE Vincent Aleven (Carnegie Mellon University, USA) Ryan Baker (Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA) Andrea Bunt (University of Waterloo, Canada) Cristina Conati (University of British Columbia, Canada) Sergio Gutierrez-Santos (Birkbeck College, UK) Wouter van Joolingen (University of Twente, The Netherlands) Ken Kahn (University of Oxford, UK) Kenneth R.
