Standard for the Classification of Adaptive Instructional Systems
The IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee has initiated a project to
standardize some of the terminology used to describe the various kinds of
Adaptive Instructional Systems (AIS) that are now beginning to appear in
the marketplace. We believe that we will soon see many more AI-enhanced
instructional products, including personalized instruction;
learning-focused recommender systems; and AIs that coach, teach, and test.
The new standards project, IEEE P2274.1
<http://sites.ieee.org/sagroups-2247-1/>, will be chaired by Dr. Robert
Sottilare of the US Army Research Lab. The goal is to develop standard
classifications and terminology that will allow vendors and customers to
consistently describe the design and functionality of an AIS. Subsequent
technical standards will use this standard taxonomy and terminology. Future
standards projects in the AIS working group might address an AIS conceptual
model, AIS modular interoperability, and perhaps structural guidelines for
learner, pedagogical, and domain models.
The P2274.1 “classification” project is just getting started. The time is
right to begin to define product categories and their functionality.
Participation by product vendors as well as their customers is critical. If

All IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee meetings are open. You do
not need to be an IEEE member to participate. Voting in the working group
requires regular attendance (2 out of the last 4 meetings), although most
issues are resolved by consensus.
