Dear Walthamstow Swifts!
You may have heard about the changes the council is making to the original
plans for the Walthamstow Wetlands. In 2014 planning permission to set up
Walthamstow Wetlands was granted to develop the Walthamstow reservoirs,
already a Special Site of Scientific Interest (SSSI) with a collection of
rare bird and bat species, into a more accessible nature reserve and to turn
the redundant engine house into an environmental education centre and a
community cafe.
The proposed change of use is something that will affect everyone... not just
the human inhabitants but mainly the impact on the wetland's wildlife through
exposure of noise and light pollution endangering the fragile balance of this
important ecosystem! Please visit the link below to read further on what has
been planned and how it can affect you and our local environment!
We would now ask LBWF to show their commitment to community and user
participation in the Wetland development by ensuring that representatives of
the community, local residents and users of the site are included on the
steering/management/trustee boards and committees. In 2014 when the planning
was approved the council planning committee specifically asked that
Watersiders were involved with ongoing decision making as they acted as
guardians over the site 24 hours of the day. This has not yet been fulfilled
and we ask that this is now acted upon.
I know some of you worked hard to ensure that WMG liquor/events license took
the neighbours and the environment into consideration. Please join with us to
do the same here. All organisations, however expert they consider themselves
to be, need to recognise the role of the community and remain accountable to
them.
