following a link from this article, i found
http://www.teachablemoment.org/index.html
a site that " provides educators with timely teaching ideas to encourage
critical thinking on issues of the day and foster a positive classroom
environment. "
looks like it has a lot of good activities.
i especially liked
http://www.teachablemoment.org/images/knowyou.pdf

with activities about "getting to know you" for all levels. not just
learning names. there are things that are about opinions, respect and so
on. could be used to practice oral communication.
