In our school, as in most schools, most of the students do either the 4 point or 5 point Bagrut in English. The exception is the "kita ktana" - the special ed students who are unable to do a 4 point bagrut (obviously whoever is able to is mainstreamed into the other classes for English). Our rationale has always been that with a 3 point bagrut at least the girls will have a valid Bagrut certificate, so it's better than nothing. Today I had a long conversation with the mother of one of our special ed students, who is in the 3 point program. This mother (who also teaches in HS, not English) claims that we are doing a serious disservice to the students by allowing them to be 3 pointers. According to what she was told, graduates with 3 points in English cannot be accepted to ANY institution of higher learning, and that it's better for them to fail 4 points than to do well on 3. Does anyone know if this is true? If so, what is the definition of a failing grade in 4 point English that would allow a student to have English written on his Bagrut certificate? 50? 40? 10? 0? In other words, is it better to get 0 in 4 points than 100 in 3 points (as far as options after HS are concerned)? I must say that some of these girls are unable to pass Module A (even with Baal Peh), so I can't imagine trying to do literature or even C with them. Any answers, based on knowledge and not assumptions, would be greatly appreciated.
