Today's Sesquiotica blog by James Harbeck is a "must read" for teaching
vocabulary.

It covers topics such as connotation, register, collocations, cultural
references (including quotations), etymology, rhymes and other echos, and
his specialty: phonaesthetics (sound symbolism). He did not mention native
language cognates which I think are especially important when teaching
English to students whose first language is not English.
