Hi all,

I want to bring to your attention a website and books that I think
will be of special interest to all English teachers.

Richard Lederer's Verbivore
http://verbivore.com/wordpress/

Dr. Richard Lederer is the author of more than forty books about
language, history, and humor, including Anguished English, Get Thee to
a Punnery, The Gift of Age and Crazy English. He taught English and
media for twenty-eight years. Dr. Lederer has been named International
Punster of the Year and Toastmasters International’s Golden Gavel
winner. He lives in San Diego.

Here is one of Richard's most recent books - something that I am sure
we can all relate to:
"A Tribute to Teachers"

Applauding the true heroes of the classroom, A Tribute to Teachers, by
Dr. Richard Lederer, offers a chorus of praise for the teachers who
change lives one day and one lesson at a time. The reader will meet
the great teachers through history, as well as teachers in literature,
film, and even in comic strips.

A Tribute to Teachers presents compelling statistics to prove that
teachers really do make a difference. In addition, a collection of
side-splitting jokes and puns from the English classroom to the Math
classroom celebrate members of the most unheralded, exhausting,
income-challenged, and ultimately rewarding of all professions.
Chapters include “Why Teachers Matter,” “The Classroom Lives of Real
Teachers,” “Students Say the Darnedest Things,” and “A Teacher’s
Legacy.”

Teaching is the highest calling, says Dr. Lederer. He quotes George
Bernard Shaw: “To me the sole hope of human salvation lies in
teaching.” Lederer says every day should be teacher appreciation day,
and he explains his reason for writing A Tribute to Teachers:

“What you are reading is a Teacher Appreciation Book. I wrote it
because I believe that an apple lasts a short time in the hands of a
teacher, but a bit of wisdom lasts a lifetime in the mind and heart of
a student.” A Tribute to Teachers includes quotes from dozens of
luminaries: John Steinbeck, Patricia Neal, Malcolm X, John F. Kennedy,
Malcolm Forbes, Helen Keller, Judy Tenuta, Barack Obama, Chaucer,
Ronald Reagan, Jerry Seinfeld, Eartha Kitt, Jay Leno, Lily Tomlin,
Mark Twain, Charles M. Schulz, Fran Liebowitz, H. G. Wells, Ralph
Waldo Emerson, Andy Rooney, and many more.
