August 20 is usually a day for celebrating my Aliah from Winnipeg in 1970. This year, however, it was given another dimension by the suicide of medea show- off Dudu Topaz, in the how-fitting bathroom of his prison cell. From king of Entertainment to dead as a Dudu. What a decline! Some English teacher may want to do a send off a la Richard Cory; or assign such a topic to a class. I first saw Dudu in open air performances which were the fashion in the '70s. Even then, he seemed to me a lecherous bully making an effort to be polite to keep the audience from leaving. He would occasionally deviate from his show, which was bad enough, for a few minutes of realy nauseating mock sincerity. Anyway, why I'm calling you tonight: I just discovered that Dudu Topaz premiered on Israel TV as as -- NOOOOOOO! -- an English teacher on onr of the early English Teaching shows. Come to think of it, I vaguely remember something ... does anyone recall which tv show this was? What worries me now is that all sorts of other people who had a moment of stardom thanks to English by Television will take a page from Mr Tapuz and threaten to eliminate media personae if they arent' allowed back into the limelight. Gabby and Debbie, Scooterman, those poor inocents from Signal CQ, that fat bully Choo choo from 'Crime and the Law,' the computer from Candy Conduit, all of them. Of course, there are a few others whose carreers skyrocketed, like Suzie Surprize and Lenny Ravich ( appearing as Debbie's uncle or something). I'm not worried about them. /Barry Silverberg ----------------------------------------------- ** Etni homepage - http://www.etni.org or - http://www.etni.org.il ** ** for help - ask@xxxxxxxx ** ** to post to this list - etni@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ** -----------------------------------------------
