Congratulations to David Young - a fellow Jerusalemite teacher and ETAI treasurer - on the publication of yet another novel. MULE CORPS WARRIOR: There can be little doubt that archival research accounts for much of the rich detail woven into David Young's latest historical novel, which explores the tales of the Jewish Legion in WWI. But the U.K.-born amateur historian and English teacher says that his combat experience aboard an armored personnel carrier in the 1982 Lebanon War also helped him get into mind of a Jewish warrior. "My own military experience in 1982 and in serving in armored infantry in Gaza probably comes out in the story," Young said about his novel, entitled "Of Guns and Mules." But although the 18-year-old hero of the recently-published book is also named David, the author says that the brave protagonist isn't a younger version of himself. "I would only hope to react as he did," said Young, who settled in Jerusalem after immigrating to Israel in 1968. The book, printed by Gefen Publishing House, begins with David Levi's deportation from Palestine by the Turks, and follows his enlistment into one of the five battalions of Jewish volunteers which the British Army employed in the war.
