While it may not be illegal to download certain songs and videos, the use and/or distribution of them in the classroom very well may be. Too many times I have heard that part of teaching is about raising human beings and promoting values, and too often I have seen teachers using protected materials without permission. It is illegal and sinful (if you care), and certainly not a good example if you are trying to raise respectful, ethical human beings. Authors are often happy to grant permission for use of protected materials in their classes, and with the internet at our fingertips, the requesting of such permission is easier than ever. There are also large repositories of materials on which rights have expired. Gutenberg is full of them, which also provide great entrees into discussions of other times and places. David R.
