Subject: Aviva's End of Year Idea - Actual Classroom Results!
From: Rivka Lewenstein <rlewen@xxxxxxxxx>

Hi all,

A couple of days ago, Aviva posted her lovely idea for an end-of-the-year
activity: making up small tasks for students to do, writing them on little
slips of paper, and putting the papers inside balloons which the students have
to pop in order to get to the task.

I wrote Aviva thanking her for the idea and telling her that I would try it in
my 10th grade 5-point class. Last night I sat and wrote up 36 tasks (it's a
very small class - only 9 students - so I decided to make 4 tasks for each
student). It was a little more than needed for a double period, but not by
much. I couldn't blow the balloons up at home, since I didn't think they'd
survive a bus ride to school, but I came early, and also got some students to
help me with that (blowing up all those balloons does take a while, so take
that into account).

Anyway, my students LOVED it! Their enthusiastic response far exceeded my
wildest expectations. As a matter of fact, our double period is (unfortunately)
made up of two separate periods, with a lunch break in between. The girls all
left the room to eat lunch, and I went up to the office to take care of some
paperwork. At some point, the girls' house mother comes up to me, and says:
Listen to this! I managed to get the students' lessons cancelled for the rest
of the day, so they could practice for their performance. (There's an
end-of-the-year party on Sunday for the whole school, and all the classes put
on performances.) But your students begged me to let them STAY one more period,
for your lesson!

Now I can assure you that if it had been a regular English lesson, my students
would have walked off very happily - but they absolutely refused to leave and
stayed for almost another full hour! (even though all their friends in the
other two groups left, of course)

I happily stayed with them, and we had an absolutely fantastic time together.

So thanks, Aviva, and I highly recommend this to everyone else.

All the best,
Rivka
